Squall has a vast, obscure history. He was born to Raine Loire who had been with Laguna Loire. She died shortly after giving birth to Squall, he became an orphan, since Laguna never knew Raine was pregnant, having visited Esthar, trying to save Ellone from the sorceress Adel.
Squall was then sent to an orphanage ran by Edea, to his surprise, Ellone was there as well. As a kid, he didn't really build relationships with the rest, but Ellone was his best friend, to the point of calling her, his big sister. Ellone was then sent away because of her abilities to send people consciousness to the past, Squall took a pretty big hit from this, since he felt abandoned and alone.
At age six, Squall was admitted at Balamb Garden to train as a SeeD. His weapon of choice, the Gunblade. This was a difficult weapon to master which would take Squall years to get used too, but this was fine for him, since he wanted to spend most of his time training, away from building relationships with other people.
The years passed and Squall's personality didn't changed, he was regarded as the "lone wolf" of Balamb Garden, labeled as a difficult student and person, yet, recognized by her amazing talents and battle abilities.

I walk across the halls of Balamb Garden, my eyes looking at each and every person in this place, they are laughing, chatting and enjoy their time here, fools, they don't know that sooner or later the person they are bonding with will leave, that's the life of a SeeD. Who knows, they might even get killed. Ever since Ellone left, I know how this world works; I know how to avoid getting hurt. All that I need is my blade, my goals and myself.
I reach the classroom, instructor Trepe is already there, handling some of the kids that don't really know what they are doing here. Sometimes I wonder if they actually know what the point of been at Balamb Garden means. I feel so out of place, Seifer is the only one that seems to know what we are supposed to be learning here. We are military tools, used for missions as contractors, paid by how dexterous we are on our abilities, hired as mercenaries. We are not companions, we are not friends to be had, and we get paid, in order to fulfill the missions given to us. What use is befriending people when our goal, most often than not, will involve dangerous situations, where feelings of friendship or love might get in the way of our goal? Imagine a situation, where to fulfill your mission you must endanger your teammates, the decision, as squad leader would be though, but we would carry it at the best of our abilities, if you add feelings to it, you would get distracted, the fear of losing someone would be to great and the mission would fail.
The lesson goes as planned, I'm focused on the theory of battle and strategic maneuvers, while others simply fall asleep or do some other useless bonding, my eyes though, glance towards Seifer, just to see him looking out of the window, careless, carefree, so relaxed. Sometimes I wonder, what does Seifer thinks? He's the complete opposite of me, yet, his abilities are a match to my own. Am I wrong on my approach? He hangs out with those two, Raijin and Fuijin, and yet, his abilities haven't tarnished. Are they friends? Or just means to an end?
I hear the intercom calling Quistis to Headmaster's Cid office, she finishes the class and everyone seems relieved, honestly, I'm relieved as well. I see everyone leaving the room, some talk about going to the cafeteria, to get those famous hot dog they sell, others, simply head out Garden, to enjoy the outsides, I, on the other hand, head over to the Training Grounds. There's never too much practice, there's never too much fights, we need to learn this, and we need to get better.
I need to be able to protect… The only way to get better is this, the only way to avoid getting hurt is by never bonding, what a solitary existence, but that's my choice and that’s how I like it. I will become better, I will become stronger and I promise, I will never fail.
