Personality:
Nanaki is a complex and mysterious being; he struggles with the conflicts of being seen as both a child and an adult, and a humble beast with human-like intellect. He is very much in control of his emotions, although he posses a warm heart. He may seem aloof at first, but he is actually very loyal to his loved ones. He adores his homeland and has a strong sense of pride that often leads him to conflict with others and the world around him. He just wants to prove himself, as he wants to honour the memory of his mother and tribesmen. He is quiet and intelligent, mature beyond his years and yet believes that his 'grandfather' Bugenhagen knows everything. Although he doesn't like to show it, he is still a child at heart and curious of the world around him.
However, it is widely regarded that he is the last of his kind as no sightings of others like him have been discovered but he still keeps hoping and searching. Since the death of his mother a few years ago, he has been beset by a darkness and a loneliness despite his best efforts to guard himself from it.
Another personal quirk that sets him apart from others is his personal code of honour and beliefs, which some may find old fashioned. For example, he believes in protecting those weaker than himself but he isn't afraid to fight for one of his causes. He is well-spoken and polite which surprises people at first as most expect such a fierce-looking beast to possess at best basic grasp of language, as opposed to an eloquence spoken with a soft, deep voice.
Appearance:
Nanaki is a powerfully built creature who bears a resemblance to both the feline and canine families, his fur a wash of fiery reds, yellows and oranges. He has a spiky dark-brown mane that runs along his neck and ends at his shoulders, two plaited braids hang behind his ears. It is clear to see that he is a warrior; he has many battle scars on his body, the most notable being a deep cut on his left eye, leaving him blind on that side. He shows his rank in his tribe by the intricate black markings on his hind-legs, and the two feathers he wears behind his ears, as well as the simple gold earrings and identical engraved bangles on each leg. He has a slender lion-like tail, at its tip is a bright flame. A recent addition can be found on his right fore-leg, a black marking crudely scrawled above his clan mark, taking on the form of the Roman numerals for thirteen (XIII).
Equipment:
* Nanaki and his tribe can use specially-crafted items which channel and augment their natural energies. These objects can be anything, but they are usually something small such as a piece of jewellery or a hair clip. Nanaki in particular uses headdresses as his primary weapon. *
Mythril Clip - A lightweight hair clip that Nanaki wears in his tangled mane, an object which has personal significance as it was given to him as a rites of passage gift.

History:
Nanaki was born in Cosmo Canyon at a time of peace between the tribes, and raised into a life of both warrior and protector to his homeland and tribe. From a young age his mother, Musca was attentive of him and spent time with him whilst his father, Seto preferred to stay at a distance as he didn't want to spoil the child. This dissimilarity caused Nanaki to harbour a complex relationship with his father; he loved and respected him and yet he felt ignored and as though his father expected more of him. As the youngster reached adolescence, the strained relationship between father and son came to a head as Nanaki would fly between sparring and blanking Seto completely just so that he could get a reaction from the stoic warrior. So much so that members of his tribe consulted their elder, Heji for a solution. There was a private meeting between the elders of both races, and it was decided that the pair would be temporarily banished from the village until they could resolve their differences.
Nanaki and his father journeyed to the outskirts of the village and although Seto tried to reason with him but his son kept to himself and refused to listen. It was difficult being away from the others, even more so because he was forced to spend time with his uncaring father. Nevertheless, the two searched the wilderness in silence putting all of their energies into tracking prey. Their silence was only broken when they had brought down a young antelope buck some days afterwards and Nanaki, plucked up the courage to speak openly with his father. He told him everything that was on his mind; and Seto listened, his features unchanging all the while. When Nanaki finished speaking, a smile crept upon the older warrior's face. Seto felt great pride for his son, knowing that it takes great strength to talk so honestly, especially in a warrior society. Afterwards, there is peace between the two and they return to the Canyon with a closer bond than the one they started with.
At this time, Nanaki was unaware of a brewing tension between his tribe and the Gi until he was awoken one night by the sounds of drums and figthing. His mother, lying beside him was as still as stone whilst Seto was standing firm by their cave opening. Even today his mind still houses the images of tall shadows dancing on the walls, the steady breaths of his parents and the sound of Seto telling them both to go to the lower caves. Despite the youth's insistence that he wanted to fight alongside his kin, he was dragged to the caverns beneath the Canyon to huddle amongst the mothers and children. With no idea of the passage of time, and only their imaginations to accompany them the younger members of the tribe recounted stories of heroic tales from their cubhood to fend off the fears they felt inside. Suddenly Seto raced past the cavern opening and Nanaki called to him in vain as he sped past. When the hum of noise grew silent, the tribe slowly returned to their children and Nanaki was reunited with Musca, who had only minor injuries and a solemn look as her son asked of Seto's whereabouts. The tribe counted their blessings that the battle had spared their children, although many had been lost on both sides. They mourned the loss of Heji, and after much thought decided to have a celebration of their victory against the Gi and to appoint a new elder. Nanaki's confusion at his father deepened, and soon turned to hatred as he reasoned that Seto had abandoned them all. A fortnight later and Bugenhagen was announced elder of the tribe. Musca greatly admired him, and the two became firm friends.
With the Gi Tribe long gone, the other tribes grew distant and isolated themselves from each other to the extent that generations regarded the existence of others like themselves as myths. Nanaki was becoming strong, yet his silent rage was worrying to his mother who set his mind to the study of nature and Magic. It seemed as though the Gi had not died in vain, as a disease swept through the Canyon, it seemed to affect only the Beast Men. When Musca too contracted it she did everything in her power to keep Nanaki safe and healthy. When his mother died, he was cared for by the village elder Bugenhagen whom he fondly calls Grandfather. Six years on, he has slid into loneliness and depression as he pushes himself to become stronger now that he is thought to be the only one left guarding the Canyon of his race.
Recently, Shinra began taking an interest in the area and set about capturing a rare specimen during one of its searches. A confused Nanaki was brought to the Labs where he was subjected to various experiments, all of which he cannot recall. His dreams are haunted by brightly coloured lights and sharp pain, but few details of worth. Other than nightmares, another souvenir from his time at the Shinra Labs was the tattoo 'XIII', something that remains a mystery to him. With the help of a stranger called Nash he was released into the city of Midgar and joined a mysterious military organisation known as STRIFE where he has been helping them in their many battles against an otherworldly individual.

A light drizzle of rain softens to mist from an enigmatic sky. The ink-blot that spread above Midgar's towers betrayed nothing of the stars or planets a creature of the Canyon yearned for. Nestled within a shelter of sodden carboard and corrugated iron Nanaki had curled himself to into a space barely fit for one of the two-legged's pets. Wrinkles formed along his snout and muzzle involuntarily, and this was accompanied by small whimpers and twitches from time to time. He dreamed he was bathed in a sickly green glow, and the feel of a cold floor pressing into his body as he lay. The feline was most troubled with the sensation of drifting from his mind and body. A stillness filtered into his slumber, but then something tore into his side and caused him to wrench into waking.
Waking up proved to be painful; a swift knock to the head left white spots dancing across his vision and fading outwards. Growling under his breath he stretched and approached the mouth of his temporary home to survey an empty, decrepit street. The sounds of approaching footfalls caused the feline to creep back to the safety of the shadows as he watched a lone human, seemingly mundane apart from the stench of decay that his nostrils traced to a limb. The man walked heavily on one leg to support the other, and this he could see was deformed and unnaturally stunted. Can nothing be spared from the atrophy? It was a fear that prowled at the edges of his mind, further fueling his desire to escape. Nanaki shivered as he stared at the retreating back of the stranger until he disappeared behind a wall.
As the feline stepped out of the shelter a light from a high structure settled on his fur, where emaciated muscles pulled tight underneath a pelt of deep ruby. Scavenging and settling with whatever you could find had taken its toll on the young warrior, but in return his mind raced with awareness and cunning and his senses had sharpened. His urban existence had yielded other knowledge; a natural curiosity had provided him with various routes to navigate the city's back streets and stay out of harm's way, and he now melted in to the shadows as if they were a second skin. Nanaki trotted through the rotting left-overs of the slum dwellers with focused steps, although his mind was agitated. Images of green lamplight and knife-like pain shattered any shred of concentration he could muster. The feline's stomach groaned to itself, its owner having long since ignored it as he sped through Midgar guided by his senses.
Above his head the soft drizzle of rain had worked itself into a steady patter, which beat a rhythmn on the hard surfaces and splattered cold trails along his back. He increased his pace, and tried to clear his mind from the buzz of thoughts and fears that rushed within his tired mind. With his attention occupied in this task, he didn't heard the muffled voices of men a few streets down but was aware of a tingling on his spine. Its the cold, the rain, the lack of sleep... I've got to keep going... Determination mixed with panic as he fought to control his hunger and tiredness, he moved with intent through a place that struck him with an unfamiliarity.
In the distance he could hear the sound of a dog barking, and moments after the clatter of something making its way through the refuse. Turning to look back he caught sight of a group of men in conversation with one another, before one looked up and met his single gaze. Both parties froze as they registered each other, and before he could see what the Human's next action would be he sped off blindly along a narrow street. Shouts rang off the metal sheeting behind him as he asked himself why he was running, a warrior of Cosmo Canyon? If I could find a place to hide, to avoid spilling blood or injury to myself... Nanaki turned a corner and found a street with whole chunks of concrete missing, barely avoiding falling down the foremost. He could hear the men following behind, chattering about how they could use him and charged through the broken streets as quickly as he dared. He had the advantage of being agile, but he still caught his paws on jagged edges. As he vaulted up a rim he checked the Human's progress again and saw them ambling through the debris with greedy looks on their faces, whilst he raced for the nearest opening.
The feline stopped in his tracks as he surveyed the space before him, and was surprised to see that it had toys for children to play with and on. He had seen so few of them compared to in his homeland that he was impressed to see a place dedicated to them in this hellish city at all. A few feet in front of him was a plastic dome in the shape of some sort of animal, with carved round ears and a friendly face. The men were close-by now, he could both hear and smell them and he fled to the dome creature. The ruby creature's hackles raised as the first man broke through the opening, soon followed by four others. The first carried a long coil of steel chains and cradled it menacingly in his hands, whilst the others stood cautiously behind him as he took small steps to wards his quarry before stopping as the warrior emitted a warning growl. The Humans leapt back at this sound, before regaining themselves as the first spoke,
What have we here lads? Whatever this thing is it could make us all a lot of money! As they murmured agreement amongst themselves, a look of resignation set on Nanaki's face as he realised that they were probably poor men fuelled by their desire for money and the chance of a better future. Leave me alone and I no harm shall come to you. He lowered his head and tried to make his body language seem less threatening. However, this had the opposite effect as they looked around them to gauge who it was that had spoken, before they stared back at the feline with widened eyes. Did that thing just speak?! Hell, its worth even more now! The men approached as he shrunk back into the cocoon of the plastic dome, a sadness swelling in his chest as he forced himself to call a Fire spell.
If only there were another way...
