History:
Born in the city of Midgar to middle class workers within Shinra HQ, Sideny had all the opportunities to do well. He moved up through school and graduated top of his class, enrolling into university and completing it with PhD's in Psychology and Medicine. After graduation, Sidney began his work with Shinra Medical Department, working as an orderly for the first few years but then moving up to doctor and psychiatrist. After three years of work, he married a secretary of the company, Amanda, and they conceived a son together, Liam. A short time afterwards, Sidney's notes were examined by several of the higher ups, and impressed by his skills and deductive findings, he was invited to Shinra R&D.
The head of the Science Department, Professor Hojo, wasn't tolerant in the least by Sidney's presence and was always sure to remind him how unwelcome he was and how ridiculous his findings were. Dr. Ross merely took the beatings from him, figuring the Professor to be a vain and shallow man for all his brilliance, and that the top company brass would recognize his findings as true scientific worth. However, his own sanity began to spiral downwards as his research continued with experimentation with many of the psych ward patients. Dr. Ross was convinced that he could discover so many things about the human mind, enough to warp it into affecting the body. He sold his case to the leaders of Shinra, explaining military applications like advanced healing factors and adrenals that could boost the strength and focus of soldiers beyond the breaking point. They accepted his proposal and gave him a grant, resources, and permission to experiment on the more delusional of Shinra's political prisoners and inmates, even providing captured refugees fresh off the street. Hojo was the only one to object, but was overruled.
Elated, Ross began his work, but soon discovered that his theories didn't hold water when faced with the incredibly low endurance of many of the subjects granted to him. Several died on the operating table after only a few minutes of his injections. He couldn't understand, he thought that his calculations were correct, the experiments could handle the strain of his proddings and modifications. But they perished or became even more twisted and useless to his purposes. When President Shinra heard the news, the board threatened to terminate his grant if results weren't forthcoming soon. Ross became obsessed with the success of his promises, working later and later, until finally he was on the verge of a mental collapse himself. But then... he had a revelation within the throes of his own madness.
An adult mind was too experienced, too world-weary and tired for his kind of psychoactive experiments, but if the subjects were younger, the mind would be stronger, more impressionable and malleable, more prone to his suggestions. Coming home that night, he saw that his wife was out with friends, and the only person home that night was... his son Liam. In the ruins of his collapsed sanity, he knew what he had to do.
Amanda returned home later on that night, found that her husband's car was in, but there were no lights on. She was scared, as she and Sidney had been fighting for some time over his obsession with his work and how much time he spent at the office and so little time with his family, that she was worried that he might have gotten in over his head. But when she opened the door, Liam was there to greet her. With ravenous eyes and a bloodthirsty smile, her own son leaped onto his mother and began to tear her apart. In the background, Sidney was screaming at his son to stop, that this wasn't what he wanted at all. His father ran over and tried to pull Liam off of her, but was pushed against the wall. His son had grown stronger, far stronger than Sidney had thought. Within minutes, his wife was dead, his son looked up at him with teeth bared, and he surely thought that his life was over.
But then his son collapsed on the floor, unconscious. The strain of keeping up such actions must have drained him. Sidney didn't know what to do. He knew that the commotion would draw security officers within minutes... and with his family dead (and worse than dead), his reputation in tatters, and his job most likely terminated and with him probably going to jail for his crimes, he did the only thing he thought as possible for him. He fled, he left his son to be picked up by Shinra, he left the corpse of his beloved wife. He left everything behind.
RP sample:
Sidney exited the river boat that pulled him into the village. It was a small fishing gathering of huts and tanning racks, and the call had been put out that there was need of someone with medical expertise. Dr. Ross was all too eager to oblige. So long as the money was satisfactory.
A man walked up to him, tall and hulking. He stuck his hand out for Ross to shake, which he did, and heard in a thick accent, "I'm glad you could come so quickly, we've had need of someone for days."
Ross nodded absently. "Understood, where are the patients?"
"Right this way, please." The large man lead the way into a nearby tent, and from the sickly cloying smell within, the doctor guessed this was the infirmary. Walking through, Ross saw children. Many, many children. They gasped in pain as their lungs seemed to be filled with fire. They were made as comfortable as they could be given the circumstances, but it was clear that they wouldn't last much longer without help. Ross knew what the problem was, he'd encountered it before. It wasn't their bodies or their lungs that were in need of examination. The malady rested within their minds. And here he was, a freelance neurologist and psychiatrist, coincidentally out here to help them.
"Let's get to work," he said.
